What a showing for the USA in London! 46 gold medals…more than any other nation….and the most overall medals. It’s the fifth consecutive Games in which the United States has dominated…but there’s a bigger story here: The Ladies. Yes….America’s female athletes were outstanding to say the least….accounting for 66 percent of our gold medals….not to mention 56 percent of US medals overall.
I guess you could say this was a “coming out” party for Title IX….the legal provision that does not allow discrimination based on sex for any activity receiving federal financial assistance. Say what you want….but many of this Olympics most exhilarating moments came during the women’s events. Basketball…judo….you name it…and I along with millions of others were watching a female make this country proud. The Olympic Games this year marked the first time that women outnumbered men on Team USA….269-261…and was the first Olympiad with every country sending at least one woman.
So the United States once again proves it’s world dominance on the biggest stage….but this time it was the ladies leading the way. From the Women’s Olympic basketball team capturing their fifth consecutive gold to gymnastics…swimmers…etc….the ladies stole the spotlight from their male counterparts. Congratulations ladies….you’ve undoubtedly earned it.
