Today state highway officials will conduct the first major inspection of the Wheeling tunnel since a $14.4 million renovation was completed two years ago.

Dan Sikora with the Division of Highways says consultant HDR Engineering will examine ventilation, lighting, roadway conditions and any other potential problems.

Officials say the tunnel will remain open during this week’s inspection work but there will be lane restrictions. 

The tunnel receives lesser inspections annually but Sikora this is the first major inspection since it reopened in September 2010.
