State highway officials are preparing to conduct the first major inspection of the Wheeling tunnel since a $14.4 million renovation was completed two years ago.

Dan Sikora with the Division of Highways says on Monday consultant HDR Engineering will examine ventilation, lighting, tile stability, drainage, roadway conditions and any other potential problems.

Officials say the tunnel will remain open during the inspection but there will be lane restrictions.

The tunnel receives lesser inspections annually but Sikora this is the first major inspection since it reopened in September 2010.
